This account book, diary, and log belonged to the Quarter Master 2nd Class aboard the USS Stewart (DD-13) in 1917. USS Stewart (DD-13) was the first USS Stewart commissioned by the US Navy and named after Rear Admiral Charles Stewart, who commanded the USS Constitution during the War of 1812.
The USS Stewart (DE-238) that resides with us at the Galveston Naval Museum is the third ship in the United States Navy to be named after Rear Admiral Stewart. This first Stewart was commissioned on December 1, 1902, and was decommissioned on July 9, 1919. After the United States declared war against Germany on April 6, 1917, the Stewart (DD-13) patrolled the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal. She was later sent to Europe for convoy duty. She rescued nine survivors of the Florence H explosion and dropped depth charges on U-108 while in service in Europe.
Although not belonging to one of the vessels housed with us at the Galveston Naval Museum, this artifact is still important to us as it shows what life in the Navy was like during the time of one of the predecessors to one of our vessels. The book contains the pay schedule for different ranks and jobs aboard the vessel. It also contains daily entries about positions and operations. Artifacts like this are invaluable to preserving our country’s naval heritage.
