Lucky Lady Commissioning Anniversary
(Held Feb 29, 2020)
Thanks to Sam Fussell with Texas A&M Galveston's Maritime Academy, Sara Martin and the Navigators of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, Master Chief Clenon Mitchell and the Glenda Dawson High School NJROTC from Pearland for a moving celebration of the USS Cavalla.
Why is USS Cavalla so Special to US Naval History?
This WWII era submarine was commissioned on Feb. 29, 1944, earning her the nickname, “Lucky Lady”, due to her commissioning being on a leap day. We are celebrating 76 years since her commissioning. It also marked her 19th birthday. The USS Cavalla is the only U.S. submarine to sink an aircraft carrier that attacked Pearl Harbor, and this is why she is know as the "Avenger of Pearl Harbor".
